Key Accountabilities: 

Role Purpose

The Senior Object Conservator is responsible for overseeing and managing the conservation activities of General Collection, ensuring that conservation of collection objects is provided according to the national and international standards and aligns with QM strategies and goals.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Long-term preservation and care of GC objects – collection under General Collection Department.
  • To Manage the movement and arrangement of the collection in existing and new storage building. 
  • To help develop and implement Integrated Pest Management Guidelines
  • and appropriate preventive conservation programs for the Department.
  • To Manage to develop and deliver regular staff training in the context of Collection Care.
  • To monitor the stores’ environmental conditions and ensure appropriate climatic conditions.
  • To monitor pest activities in the studio and the store in compliance with the Department Integrated Pest Management Guidelines.
  • To carry out and advise on appropriate infestation treatments on objects with concerns or active infestation.
  • To Advise on Archival storage and mounting materials for safe uses as necessary.
  • To assist in providing advice and guidance for colleagues regarding the correct handling and storage and transportation requirements to promote best practices throughout the Department for the long-term preservation of its collections.
  • To record all conservation activities undertaken in accordance with the QM documentation system.
  • To support all other departmental activities as Required.
  • Maintain high standards of interdepartmental communication.
  • Develops and improves procedures and policies for its Section.
  • Seek ways to improve processes and quality of work.
  • Provides regular reports to Director.
  • Works directly with others within QM to speed up processes and increase efficiency.
  • Manages relations with 3rd parties, suppliers, and outsourced service providers to maximize QM.
  • Attends conferences, meetings, and seminars to remain abreast of industry trends and the latest development.
Qualifications/Requirements: 

Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge in preventive conservation.
  • Average understanding and skills of the collection management system, preferably KeEMu.
  • Knowledge of contemporary practices of time-based conservation and collection care and management.
  • Demonstrated strength in coordinating and working with teams collaboratively on complex projects.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a self-motivated and dynamic way to meet deadlines, enjoying the freedom to work on one’s following directions.
  • Strong organizational skills are essential, with the ability to prioritize and organize complex and multiple activities.
  • Good writing skills with precise attention to detail.
  • Personable and engaging in a social setting, inexperienced with public speaking.
  • Strong computer and software skills essential, preferably within a PC environment (Office 365).

  • Experience Working with Mixed Collections in Museums.

 

Education, Experience, and certification requirements

  • MA/MSc in Conservation of museum objects - Specializing in one of the relevant disciplines, Archaeology, Objects, Textiles, Paper, Paintings, Preventive Conservation etc.
  • Minimum 12 years relevant experience.
