Key Accountabilities: 


Role purpose: To oversee and manage the conservation activities of General Collection, ensuring that conservation of collection objects is provided according to the national and international standards and align with QM strategies and goals.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Proposes, implement, and periodically reports on General Collection Development Plan, KPIs, and other strategic documents for its Section
  • Works closely with heads of other Sections
  • Drafts and proposes relevant policies and procedures
  • Works with direct reports to identify and establish medium to short term strategic priorities and targets, in line with GC's policies and guidelines and ensures their successful execution
  • Creates, supervises, and reports on the short, medium, and long term conservation plan
  • Works closely with Collections management section to identify conservation priorities
  • Creates, monitors, reports, and calls for action all activities regarding environmental monitoring and integrated pest management activities
  • Creates, monitors, and supervises carrier development plans, internship opportunities, training, and mentorships for direct reports
  • Drafts, proposes, justifies, and plans all budget and purchase related activities for its Section in cooperation with Operations Section
  • In collaboration with Collections Management and Operation section, prepare emergency, evacuation, disaster, and related plans concerning the safety of the collection
  • Approves all works and activities to be carried in the Conservation Section
  • Supervises, and mentors' staff, directing the activities of the teams under her/his supervision to fulfill the Section's strategic objectives
  • Assumes responsibility for all treatment and conservation and condition reports of objects in the care of GC
  • Provides standards on packing and handling of collection objects. 
  • Develops and improves procedures and policies for its Section
  • Provides regular report to Director
  • Seek ways to improve processes and quality of work in its Section
  • Strives to provide uninterrupted support to other sections, departments, and entities
  • Works directly with other heads in QM to speed up processes and increase efficiency
  • Manages relations with internal and external institutions in the field of conservation and preservation of collection objects
  • Attends conferences, meetings, and seminars to remain abreast of industry trends and the latest development
  • Motivates staff and empowers direct reports by providing the necessary tools and support required to meet Department goals
  • Establishes clear direction, prioritizes tasks, assigns and delegates responsibility; monitors individual performance, provides regular feedback, and takes prompt action
  • Builds opportunities for staff to suggest, participate in and contribute to improvement, innovation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives 
  • Provides guidance and ensures staff comply with QM's policies, processes, practices, and systems
  • Implements Qatarisation programs to enable QM to attract local talent and to develop talent over time to take on meaningful roles within QM. 
  • Bachelor's Degree in conservation or related required.  
  • Master's Degree in conservation preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years working within a collection, preferably museum or gallery, or university or foundation, related explicitly to the above responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of contemporary practices of time-based conservation and collection care and management would be strongly beneficial.
  • Advanced knowledge of preventive and interventive conservation.
  • Basic knowledge of collection care and management. 
  • Basic knowledge of CMS is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and work with teams on complex projects.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a self-motivated and dynamic way to meet deadlines, enjoying the freedom to work on one's own simultaneously as follow direction. 
  • Strong organizational skills are essential, with the ability to prioritize and organize complex and multiple activities. 
  • Superb writing skills with precise attention to detail. 
  • The ideal candidate will be very personable and engaging in social settings and experience with public speaking. 
  • Strong computer and software skills essential, preferably within the PC environment (Office 365).
