Key Accountabilities: 

 

Role purpose: The Curator of Photography, Video & Moving Image is a key member in the AMM curatorial team and will participate in the research, development, and interpretation of time-based and lens-based media within the Art Mill Museum’s collection and exhibition program. The role spans historical and contemporary practices, documentation, media archives, and interdisciplinary approaches. The curator will contribute to developing the collection and to curate exhibitions in connection with the AMM strategies. They will work closely with artists, institutions, and communities locally and globally.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Collection Development & Research

  • Research, document, and oversee the development of the photography and time-based collections, including archives.
  • Propose acquisitions that strengthen the museum’s photography and time-based media holdings.
  • Contribute to AMM’s long-term development in relation to AMM’s overall strategy and exhibitions schedule.
  • Contribute to the compiling of acquisition contracts along with the collection management team.
  • Develop strategies for the future museum regarding conservation, storage, digitization, and accessibility in collaboration with conservation and collection management teams.
  • Input to, maintain and update the collections database.
  • Participates in original research and exhibition projects and generate high-quality curatorial content, including catalogues, essays, and exhibition texts.
  • Participates in the preparation of the museography program, the acquisition proposals, the pedagogical project, artistic commissions and produce texts for these projects, as well as for any other communication as required by AMM.
  • Write scholarly essays for exhibition catalogues and other internal/external publications.
  • Public Engagement & Outreach

Design and contribute to dynamic public programs including screenings, talks, and artist-led sessions.

  • Cultivate educational resources and collaborations that engage students, researchers, and broader audiences in collaboration with the Curator of Learning and Audience Engagement.
  • Contribute to the museum’s editorial and online content strategy related to photography and moving image.

Institutional Collaboration

  • Liaise with Qatar Museums’ Film and Photography departments, DFI (Doha Film Institute), Tasweer (QM Photography Biennale) and local and international media festivals and institutions.
  • Represent AMM in professional networks, and academic fora related to photography, media art and film. 
Qualifications/Requirements: 

 

 

  • MA in Photography, Film, Media, Art History, Museum or Curatorial Studies. 
  • At least 10 - 12 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Strong understanding of photography, film and video historical and contemporary practices.
  • Ability to liaise closely with photography conservators and framers for best standards.
  • Good knowledge of the different media techniques.
  • Proven experience in collections management, exhibition development, as well as acquisitions.
  • Excellent research, writing, and editorial skills in English (knowledge of Arabic is an asset).
  • Experience with museum collections databases (EMu or similar CMS system preferred) and digital asset management.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and Microsoft Office.
  • Proof of independent research, publications and articles with respected journals and institutions.      
  • Creative and critical thinker with a passion for storytelling.
