About the Job: 

Role purpose : Responsible for leadership of the Museum’s informal educational program development and implementation aligned with the institution’s strategic plan and operational goals. Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Learning and Outreach.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Drive and oversee the development of appropriate and innovative learning programmes, materials and content for special exhibitions and permanent galleries for all audiences including school, family and adult 
  • Contribute to development of major gallery refurbishments and other learning spaces to ensure initiatives are engaging, have clear learning outcomes, and are age and audience appropriate
  • Participate in Research Committee and oversee delivery of Visiting Scholar, Interns and Researcher programmes and opportunities 
  • Work with Head of Museum Guides to develop effective museum guide and tour content in line with wider exhibition, learning and interpretation goals
  • Oversee development of targeted learning publications in print and digital formats relating to Mathaf’s collections
  • Maintain up to date and full information about formal curriculum, educational policy and Qatar’s development goals 
  • Manages the planning of workshops, lectures, and special events
  • Ensure development of appropriate learning resources, aids, tools and spaces across learning programmes including galleries, web, outreach activities etc.
  • Utilizes evolving educational technologies (websites, CD-ROMs, DVDs, video conferencing, Apps and digital designs etc.) to broaden access to the museum's resources for school-based education, incorporating a sense of interactivity whenever possible
  • Work with Head of Community Outreach to address issues of accessibility across learning audiences and ensure equal learning research opportunities for all
  • Work with Deputy Director Learning & Outreach to develop clear learning strategy for existing and new audiences of all age-groups, with short, medium and long-term goals
  • Develop departmental policies and procedures for learning in line with international best practice
  • Ensure regular evaluation and assessment of learning and interpretation programmes, in collaboration with QM Strategy department
  • Build strategic relationships within formal and informal educational communities in Qatar and advocate for museum education to key stakeholders
  • Maintain up to date working knowledge of latest developments in international museum education and pedagogy and ensure best practice in all areas of departmental activity
  • Support the overarching Mathaf vision and strategy in all areas of the described role
  • Manage team on a day-to-day basis, address performance issues, ensure effective communication and that all deadlines are met by the team, manage appraisals and deal with issues as and when they arise
  • Prepare strategic objectives, allocate departmental tasks and compile individual development plans for all staff in Learning & Academic Programmes team 
  • Ensure in-house opportunities for staff training and support Qatar team members in developing skills and knowledge appropriate to current and future roles 
  • Drive effective recruitment activities as appropriate and ensure departmental staffing is commensurate with strategic goals
  • Develop departmental budget forecasts and ensure correct expenditure and budget records throughout the fiscal year
  • Facilitate budget development for Learning & Outreach with other Heads to produce final budget for Deputy Directors approval
  • Finance administration in Oracle as required
  • Central point for collation and development of Learning & Outreach Calendar and all associated activities, reporting etc.


About The Applicant: 
  • Knowledge in best museum and education practices
  • Knowledge of educational / developmental theory
  • Knowledge and interest in modern and contemporary art terms and vocabulary in both English and Arabic
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentations skills with preference to experience in public presentations and background.
  • Excellent time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Language proficiency in both languages Arabic and English (Verbal/Written)
  • Advanced skills in writing creative content, proposals, briefs and educational materials.
  • Able to lead, mentor and supervise co-workers, and volunteers in a variety of tasks
  • A team player, takes initiative and pays attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Studio Art, Education, or related field; Masters preferred
  • Minimum of Five years professional experience in a museum educationa field or related cultural or education sectors 
  • Proven track record of educational and/ or informal learning program development and implementation in museum or related public environment.
