About the Job: 

The Division of Cultural Heritage is responsible for inventorying and safeguarding heritage assets (sites, buildings and objects); a database
captures and stores the data-sets of the national, archaeological and heritage sites. The Archaeology GIS Specialist is responsible to carry out an efficient and accurate documentation of Heritage Areas in terms of spatial and textual data. The Archaeology GIS Specialist has to take care of, update and complete mainly spatial-GIS information in the database and carry out further research and analysis on the basis of aerial and satellite imagery as well as historic resources.


  • Responsible for collecting and analysing geographical and spatial data and for organizing already available GIS data;
  • Supporting the Division in the development of GIS-based strategies and policies in view of completing the map of the country’s heritage areas;
  • In charge of the retrieval and geo-referencing of new aerial and satellite imagery useful for the mapping of new potential heritage areas as well as for the analysis of existing ones;
  • Supporting the completion of the documentation of Heritage Areas, Heritage Activities, and Management Areas including also the association with related publications, photographs and all of the available digital documentation;
  • Developing models to manage GIS projects, such as e.g. the management of geo-spatial data related to the ‘Mapping Old Doha’ project;
  • Supporting the Division teams with desk-based research to facilitate the analysis process prior to a survey of a specific area under development, in order to take informed decisions and to define appropriate working strategies for documentation and protection;
  • Designing buffer zones as well as mapping management and protected areas (Heritage Preservation Zones);
  • Locating sources of GIS data from government, state agencies, and private companies and advising about best procedures for loading/transferring GIS data between different systems
    (mainly with MME: QNMP and the Centre for GIS);
  • Migrating GIS-based data from Foreign Missions and other projects.
  • Supporting and supervising documentation practices in the field according to QM Manuals and Guidelines;
  • Creating  queries, generating  shapefiles  and reports from databases;
  • Cooperating with the Land/Geomatics Surveyor in completing the documentation;
About The Applicant: 
  • MA in Archaeology with proficient experience in GIS with minimum of 5 years experience
  • Experience of excavations, survey and post-excavation work
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team
  • Excellent documentation, analysis and research skills
  • Experience with the ESRI suite of products and Quantum GIS
  • Familiarity with GPS technologies
  • Knowledge of cartographic standards and principals
  • Experience in CAD to GIS data conversion
  • Geo-referencing of scanned maps and old images
  • Driving licence to work on several locations around Qatar
  • Work in the Middle East or the Gulf Countries will be added advantage in Gulf archaeology field
  • Fluent in English, Arabic basic preferable
