About the Job: 

Role Purpose : Reporting to the Museum Director and working closely with the museum's senior leadership team, the Deputy Director of Learning and Outreach will contribute to make "Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art'a dynamic site for interdisciplinary programming relevant to the museum's diverse audiences. Work in developing ground-up programming that utilizes the richness of resources at Mathaf. The Deputy Director of Learning and Outreach is responsible for oversight and management of the museum's Educational programs, Library and Visitor Services. And must be committed to a collaborative and innovative approach to developing engaging museum experiences. The museum is an engaged partner in the intellectual work of the campus in Education City in Qatar Foundation, involving students, faculty and staff as initiators, partners, and participants in the research and development of all aspects of its programming. The Deputy Director of Learning will work with museum staff, faculty, and students to increase the museum's integration into the fabric of entities within Education City in Qatar Foundation and the community at large.

• Effectively manage and oversee Mathaf Learning and Outreach division, including Education, Library and Visitors Services staff.
• Share knowledge, expertise, and provide leadership and strategic direction for Museum departments of Education, Library and Visitor Services with mentorship opportunities for young Qatari and Museum professionals.
• Assist the director in long-range institutional planning, such as establishing programmatic, learning methodology development, and strategic planning and including the business plan editing and implementation.
• Work in collaboration with appropriate Mathaf and QM staff to conceive and plan the annual department budget for activities and programs related to the departments.
• In support of the Director, jointly implement museum policies, activities, and priorities. Support the director to identify and hire staff as needed for Education, Visitor Services and Library departments, and hire consultants and docents/mediators as needed for various programs.
• Serve as a liaison between Mathaf and QM to work on projects with centralized functions such as Publishing, Exhibitions, PR, Marketing, Procurement, Legal, or Human Resources.
• Serve as a member of the senior leadership team of Mathaf and supervise a team of approximately 20 professionals.
• Oversee Learning and Outreach division department and project meetings; work plans; and schedules.
• Oversee and implement new Mathaf special projects or initiatives related to the division as needed.
• In support of the Museum Director, help provide strategic direction for a range of learning programs that support the mission and business plan of Mathaf.
• Advocate for the Mathaf Education to ensure the staff has the support and resources to maintain museum best practices and standards.
• Work in collaboration with Mathaf’s Curatorial, Exhibitions and Operations teams (who report to centralized QM services) to coordinate activities and priorities to align curatorial, exhibition, and education departments.
• Work in collaboration with curators to provide insightful and accessible interpretive material.
• Ensure the timely execution of all learning program aligned with exhibitions, exhibition catalogues, and publication projects.
• Provide editorial oversight and support as needed.
• Plan, organize, and support all public programs and creative learning tools and methods.
• Prepare and present talks or presentations on original Mathaf learning and teaching methodologies.
• Oversee the library resource as per professional standards and quality acquisitions and subscription to publications; enable access for staff and visiting users, in collaboration with library and education staff.
• Plan, organize, and support programs initiated by the library. Follow up on publications and cataloguing in line with QM and public libraries in Qatar.
• Oversee access and exchange of resources with other Museums and university libraries within Education city, and in Qatar and with peer institutions.
• The Head of Visitor Services oversees all visitor services staff and operations including reception, ticketing, greeting, hosting, tours, some public programs, volunteers and docents. The Head of Visitor Services will coordinate, roster and manage visitor services staff, execute a ticketing system, booking and visitor statistics reporting systems; and assist with the development, production and implementation of standard operating procedures and systems for front of house operations.

About The Applicant: 

• Advanced degree in Education, museum studies, visual arts, or related field. Minimum Masters.
• Minimum ten years work experience with a minimum of five years of progressive experience in the museum education field, with relevant experience in education/interpretation, public programming, and visitor engagement.
• Excellent writing, public speaking and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects.
• Written communication skills to prepare a variety of materials including correspondence, reports, policies/procedures, informational documents, position descriptions, training manuals, and performance evaluations.
• Experience in developing , researching, and outreach of educational and public programs
• Evidence of training and mentorship.
• Experience in launching new projects and/or working in start-up environments.
• Evidence of strong leadership, budgeting, project management and organizational skills. Supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaboration.
• Track record of developing and implementing innovative educational programs in an art museum or other arts-based organization.
• Experience providing effective vision and strategic direction to museum education and visitor engagement staff and volunteers.
• Facility with public presentation and convening diverse public groups.
• Experience managing substantial department, project, and program budgets.
• Experience using managerial and leadership skills to lead by example and encourage collaborative efforts.
• Experience supervising staff and volunteers.
• Experience working effectively with students to achieve organizational and educational goals.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CMS systems.
• MA in Art History, Museum Studies, Education, or related field
• 8+ years of experience
• Experience in working directly with artists to realize artist projects that connect with multiple audiences.
• Extra certificates and interest in additional learning opportunities
• Published work related to the field of work
• Proven record of public talks and presentations of specialized subject related to field of work.
